The worst way to wake up is with a start, as if you forgot something dire and it’s haunted your sleep until your body physically sling-shots you out of it.

That’s how I come back to reality, with a dry mouth and a hangover even though I barely had two drinks last night. It takes me a moment after sitting up in a cold sweat to remember why I’m in my bed in my clubbing clothes.

And then I hear a noise from my living room, a rustling that is too loud to be a creak of a floor or my upstairs neighbors, and I scream bloody murder.

“Just me! It’s just me! Shit, I’m sorry!” Jack comes running in with nothing but a pair of black sweatpants on.

No shirt, just full abs on display as the waistband of the pants sinks dangerously low. His hair is disheveled, waves and curls every which way. If mine looked like that, I’d resemble an electrocuted clown, but of course, my brother’s best friend looks dashing and effortlessly sexy.

Air burns as I exhale from the breath I’ve been holding in fear. “Jesus, you scared the shit out of me.”

He stays in the doorway, but his eyes are soft as he looks me over. “I didn’t think … I’m sorry. I stayed on the couch after you fell asleep, I don’t know, I just figured you might not want to be alone.”

The unsure tone of his voice makes me blush because it’s kind of cute when Jack gets nervous. It’s not often that he’s on the side of that equation when it comes to us.

“Yeah … thanks.” I look down at my comforter, which covers my jeans and tank from the night before. “You put me to bed like this?”

“Didn’t think you’d appreciate me undressing you.” He smirks.

“You’d be right about that.” Although once upon a time, that was all I wanted.

“I made coffee and scrounged up some oatmeal if you want some. I’ll give you a minute to … change or whatever.” He looks flustered as he observes me in my bedroom, and even after all the tears and fear last night, I’m still able to blush.

Because we’re alone in my flat, and he slept here to make sure I was safe.

Thoughts flood through my head as I get up and head to the bathroom, grabbing a pair of leggings and a T-shirt on the way. I can’t bear the scratch of my jeans on my legs for one more moment and whip them off as soon as I turn the sink on to warm. I wash my face, brush my teeth, and look in the mirror. It isn’t the best, but it’s not the worst. And Jack saw me through my braces and pimple era, so it couldn’t get much worse.

My flat isn’t small, or at least not the smallest apartment I’ve ever lived in, but Jack being in it makes it feel miniature. He’s always been a foot taller than me, but something about
